There is a process you go through when you are lucky enough to be challenged and inspired by those around you. You start asking yourself tough questions, such as, “How can we solve this ‘thing’ that is supposedly impossible to solve?” Or, “What is needed to achieve the unthinkable?”
Personally, I am not afraid of failing; it’s the not trying that scares me. The best way to learn is get out there and do it. And if you fail, learn from that failure and do better the next time. Each effort propels you further down the road, and on that road take the time to learn from those around you. That’s what I’ve done throughout my life, and I’ve never regretted it.
Currently, I am in the enviable position to be surrounded by an amazing group of people, and each challenges and helps me grow in different ways.
Starting with my father Don Gile, a self-made leader in business, who ingrained in me the value of trying and the seal of a handshake. I learn from him every day: how to be generous, how to lead in business and how to value the strengths of others.
I am amazed that Richard Edlund, a seven-time Oscar-winner and a “founding father” of visual effects, has joined our board. He inspires me to push the envelope on the impossible and in a way that evokes creativity. He challenges me to continue to explore beyond the now.
Our president Ted Schilowitz, best known for the years he spent as a Red Cinema Camera evangelist, is currently a futurist at Fox. He helps me look at the story that we as a company want to tell. He brings things to life, pushes like-minded people together and bounces key points off the team at the right time.
John Parenteau, our Managing Director, has a background in filmmaking and visual effects, having spent time at companies including Amblin Entertainment and Pixomondo. John brings balance and creativity to the table. He constantly raises questions that help us achieve our goals. He is a voice of reason that inspires me to reevaluate and focus on what we need as a whole rather than getting bogged down by little things that aren’t helping our growth. His ability to multitask is like nothing I’ve seen before!
Erik Smith, our Director of Technology, spent his early years in the computer, biotech and electronic design fields creating high-content, high-throughput image analysis, cluster and grid computing systems. Erik becomes the systems he builds, putting his heart and soul into each unit. His mind is ahead of the hardware and software, pushing it beyond its limits and ours. He has taught me that self-drive can be faster than any supercomputer. He’s a solid rock, yet he flows like water.
Finally, Dr Srinidhi Varadarajan, creator of some of the world’s fastest supercomputers, whose pioneering work in supercomputing, parallel processing, scalable network emulation, and network routing algorithms, is responsible for the research, design, build, functionality and revolutionary speed of our technology. Srinidhi pushes the mind to accept the unthinkable as fact, yet while charging ahead methodically. He inspires me to learn from the unknown and question the impossible in order to solve the puzzles we are given. He leads through generosity, and the gift of knowledge. As my business partner he challenges the landscape and myself!
My process is simple: listen to the questions being asked, figure out the need, and address the concerns. If I don’t have the right answers that’s ok because I’m driven to seek them out. I put my trust in the team I’ve surrounded myself with, and know that together we will find the solution. That is what Silverdraft and the Devil & Demon Strategy is all about.
I ask each of us to push and learn, not just from each other but from all of those around us. I want to learn from my entire board and team, but also every client and student. It is their challenges we like to embrace, and design systems to solve. That is what makes me, and all of us, smile. ______________________________________________________________
